Nozawa Onsen Spring Snow Report, 9th March 2019
It was a pretty amazing day up on Mount Kenashi yesterday. In fact, it was a great day on the mountain and in the village. In keeping with the tradition of receiving far more than forecast, the top of the mountain received in excess of 60 centimetres from close Thursday. It continued to snow down in the village for most of the day too. “Magic March” sure got busy living up to its name!
Today looks like it will mostly concern itself with sunshine and blue sky. What more could we ask for than a radiant bluebird day in March? Let’s try not to get too excited but there is more snow on the forecast. At this stage, it looks as though it could be that situation we experienced a few days ago where there’s snow up top and rain in town. Following today and relatively clear Sunday, there’s a bit of weather around. As mentioned, it is currently forecast to turn to snow on the top half of Mount Kenashi. But if the temperature drops, who knows? At this point, our best chance for another bit big dump is late Wednesday.
Considering all of what we just learnt above, let’s remember that it is spring. Lift tickets prices and accommodation get progressively cheaper as spring goes on, right up until Golden Week in early May. The bonus is that there are fewer people on the runs and in the restaurants. We might say that the downside to spring skiing is that we don’t get the massive amounts of snow like earlier in the season …but we just had 60 centimetres (plus an extra 2cm last night)!
What’s the official word from the top of Mount Kenashi this morning?
At 7:15 am;
Temp at the top; -4C
New snow since close; 2cm
Base at the top; 310cm
