Just got back from the Ski show in Sydney and many people were concerned it was getting hard to find a bed in Nozawa in January. March for me is one of the best months any year as we have an established snow base, no crowds, great weather and still get some nice dumps. The March of 2012 in particular we got on a roll in the middle of the month and had a bunch of days with 20cm plus dumps on top of almost 400cm base so there were insane conditions everyday.   Nozawa Onsen has been a popular destination for travellers for hundreds of years and there is a very wide range of accommodation options in our little village. Ryokans are traditional style Inns or Hotels, they are generally quite upmarket and a higher price. Minshikus are a less expensive family run style, still traditional but less formal and in Nozawa are run by friendly local families that open their doors to guests from all over the world. The forest surrounding Nozawa unfolds to give endless hiking possibilities. You can check out all those places you thought about venturing in Winter. Maybe even find a lost ski or Go Pro! These guys are on the lookout for Mountain Vegetables to make into Tempura for their lunch. You can take guided tours too from the Tourist office in town. There are lots of wild vegetables that are edible and taste delicious but best to go with one of the elder members of the village so you know you are picking the right things….

A Solitary Paddle a great way to cool down on a hot day in Nozawa The mercury has been heading up the last few days in Nozawa and it is getting hot! Luckily there are some cool escapes in Nozawa, this little lake just a few kilometres away. You can also hike or ride up to the top at Yamabiko and it is always a few degrees cooler than in the village. We have the morning markets on in town today too if want to take a wander down. Remember this day coming out of the Nagasaka Gondola building and looking to the right and seeing this perfection on the Kokenashi course. With the trees sparkling and 20cm of fresh snow. We had had a few good dumps in a row then. It was a Monday so no one around and still not many overseas guests in those days so was nice and empty for a perfect blue bird day.
