Nothing beats fresh powder under blue skies

After receiving a dump of 35cm in time for the opening of the lifts, there was some great powder to be found. The sun started to make an appearance by about 10am and stayed out for the whole day. There was thunder and lightning in the early hours with heavy snowfall throughout the day. The snow wasn’t our usual fluffy Japanese powder, though once the strong winds ceased, the snow continued to dump in its typical light, fluffy form. We’re now sitting on a base of 125cm, with 30cm of fresh in the past 24 hours. Since the early hours of today, we’ve seen heavy snow falling across Nozawa Onsen. A huge storm is taking shape right above us, with strong wind gusts and lightning; a rarity at this time of year in Nozawa Onsen. Already there is 20cm of fresh up the top and we’re expecting heavy snow to continue throughout the day with nearly 50cm predicted for the top of the mountain and around 25cm down in the village. The snow to skier/boarder ratio was at an all time high for the season. Our guests made the most of the conditions. The snow was moist but fast and there were some decent soft sections. Winds were blowing quite strongly up at Yamabiko so the more protected runs like Uenotaira and Yunomine were more popular. Dumping Midday update from Nozawa Onsen. It is dumping! Japan is getting snow across the board even decent falls in Tokyo this morning. Some roads and trains are closed due to the heavy falls in so please check before travelling. Looks like we are in for a good lesson from Mother Nature…

With some light snow cover from the night before, the pistes were smooth and fast. The skies were cloudy but visibility was great almost the whole day. 16 of our lifts were open and we’re hoping to open the last couple after some heavy snow which should be falling soon. The base up the top continues to accumulate thanks to some fresh snow yesterday. We’re now sitting at a depth of one metre at Uenotaira and 105cm at the summit of Mt. Kenashi. It’s looking like this will increase considerably over the coming week, with consistent snowfall predicted throughout the week. A few heavier dumps are expected during the week too so keep an eye out for some new terrain being opened! The Fire Festival, one of the yearly highlights at Nozawa Onsen took place last night and brought hundreds of locals and foreigners alike. The festivities began a couple of hours after finishing up a beautiful day on the slopes, and continued late into the night. The men will be finishing the construction of the shrine by lunch, in time for the festivities to kick off at 7pm.
