We had a couple of Dutch girls come out of the Dutch mountains last season and sample the Vitamin P of Japan. They scored on the powder front in Nozawa and did not want to leave. Like many people that visit Nozawa they fall in love with the snow but more so fall in love with the Village, Food, Onsens and friendly locals. Here are a few photos of their stay, may help with your decision on whether to book for this coming season…
Working Life in Nozawa Onsen
We had a lot of great staff last season in Nozawa and would like to say a big thank you to all of them. Think we need to make a special mention of our rookie of the year Nashimoto san. He joined our team at the spritely age of 70 and was a real asset to the team. In a season full of huge snow dumps he could shovel snow better than guys well less than half his age! We have been friends with Nashimoto san for 25 years now, when he was my old boss at the Nozawa Ski Patrol. He worked for the ski patrol for 38 years, a few of the later ones on a snowboard! He […]

Otsukaresamadeshita. Guess we better do a wrap up for the season that was in Nozawa.
The Ski lifts at Nozawa Onsen Officially closed on May the 6th with the end of the Golden Week Holiday. They are still running but only to take up racers doing some spring training. We had a 135cm base on the last day so still some fun spring skiing to be had if you strap on some skins and enjoy your back country touring. Has been another amazing season in Nozawa with yet again a crazy amount of snow. Reaching a peak of 470cm Base up top around mid February. We started with a bang in mid December when we got around 300cm of snow in just 4 days! It was ridiculous; I don’t ever remember that much snow so […]
Last day of April a beauty in Nozawa
Base up top: 175 cm Temp Top; 10 Degrees get the T Shirt on! Base at Uenotaira : 80 cm New Snow since close: 0 cm Weather; Sunny skies End of another great month of Spring skiing in Nozawa. April is a great month in the mountains for me as the Village morphs back into a sleepy farming town, and we still have beautiful spring skiing on the slopes and surrounding mountains. Very quiet in town and can get into all my favourite restaurants again! Another beautiful clear day here today and perfect to enjoy a beer out the front of Buna and take in the views. The bottom slopes are starting to turn to green and the farmers are […]

Cherry Blossoms in full bloom in and around Nozawa Onsen
Base up top: 220 cm Temp Top; 6 Degrees Base at Uenotaira : 125 cm New Snow since close: 0 cm Weather; Sunny skies Another warm sunny start to the day here in Nozawa Onsen. Temps are really getting up there with all this sunshine so some great T Shirt spring skiing weather on offer. Still very quiet on the slopes but with the Golden Week set of holidays kicking off tomorrow there should be quite a few people drifting into the village from tonight. Amazingly the resort still has top to bottom skiing on offer on the beginner Forest trail but most of the lower courses are pretty sparse on cover now. All this warm weather has brought on […]
Spring Sunshine on the way – Good availabiity for Golden Week in Nozawa
Base up top: 250 cm Temp Top; 3 Degrees Base at Uenotaira : 170 cm New Snow since close: 0 cm Weather; Overcast but set to clear After a few overcast days in Nozawa looks like we have plenty of sunshine and light winds on the way. Great conditions for the top of the resort or some touring. With just 2 weeks remaining in the season and a very respectable 250cm base in place up the top looking like we should cruise thru the Golden Week holiday in style. Very quiet on the slopes now and definitely that private resort feeling, often skiing down with not another soul to see! Also in town no problem to get into your favourite […]
Sunny up top
Base up top: 280 cm Temp Top; +5 Degrees New Snow since close: 0 cm Weather; Valley fog There is some intense fog hovering in the low valleys this morning. This is usually the result of rainfalls, which had intensified into the afternoon yesterday giving a somewhat tropical feel to the area. Luckily at the moment the areas above around 1000 meters are bathed in sunshine as the peaks soar above the low lying cloud. Today the skiing and boarding will be good on piste in the upper areas of the mountain, it will be fairly fast as it always is after rain. Looking at the forecast ahead we have seen some improvements in the overnight updates. Snow […]
Wet but fast
Base up top: 275 cm Temp Top; +4 Degrees New Snow since close: 0 cm Weather; Overcast After a severe onslaught of soil hydration yesterday afternoon the much maligned precipitation has eased off overnight and we are currently faced with overcast by dry weather. Like yesterday, it will be best to make the most of the conditions earlier as rainfalls are expected to make a reappearance at some point today. Regarding snow conditions the resort runs will be wet and slushy, but fast. Best on the groomed runs. The upper areas of the mountain are holding up very well given the conditions. Tomorrow snow is forecast the fall on the resort peaks above around 1400 meters. Following this, […]
