Snow dancing Sunday Morning everyone! We started our weekend with some sunny runs before the cloud rolled in. Temperature is still low in the village and on the mountain and some snow is expected later today. Couple of high school events on today in town. Over at Kandahar you will see the kids competing in the giant slalom. You will get good views of the action at the end of the forest trail. If you’re over at Neo bar grabbing some lunch you will get a great view of the ski jump competition. Heavy falls of snow expected to start tomorrow night and will be at its heaviest Tuesday night. Nozawa Snow Report Saturday 20th January 2018
Saturday sunshine Good morning everyone, we woke to a crisp chilly morning with blue skies today. It’s encouraging feeling the temp drop around the village which confirms the predictions that a change is on it’s way. So predicted snowfall is currently sitting at over 1m for the week and expected to start snowing lightly tonight with the larger fall coming in Monday night. Will definitely keep you updated!! Nozawa Snow Report Friday 19th January 2018
Snow falling in the forest on top of the mountain Yesterday we got to the top of the mountain to find the trees covered in snow. We found ourselves in that idealic Japanese forest. Yamabiko was covered in cloud and fog while the sun shone in the village. There were people having fun in the snow park testing out there jump skills. The forecast is holding steady for the massive amount of incoming snow. We’ve had a few cms of snow on the ground this morning, we should see the sun this afternoon again, then from Saturday night the snow should begin falling, peaking on Wednesday. The big chill is coming Wax those boards and ready the shovels as we have some heavy snowfall predicted for early next week. The temperatures will continually drop until they plummet on Tuesday. With this temperature drop we should see light snow fall to bring us into the weekend. The best conditions will be up at Yamabiko on top of the mountain. Snow falling on top of the mountain Yesterday we woke up with a layer of fog around which later cleared to a sunny day. Best conditions will be found up on the top runs today where it’s forecast for snow. We should expect some light snow over the next few days and Monday night will hopefully start the week off right with some heavy snowfall. Wonderful festival last night Sunny conditions on the mountain yesterday which led in to a wonderful Dosojin festival last night. We have 20 cm expected tomorrow to fall throughout the day and evening followed by some light snow to finish the week. Nozawa Onsen held the Dosojin or Fire festival last night which drew a massive crowd and was spectacular to witness. Enjoy these blue bird days and join in as we snow-dance our way through the week. Absolutely knee deep in powder What a magic day we had yesterday here in Nozawa Onsen, with that 46cm of fresh powder, absolutely knee deep in the morning and it kept snowing until around midday. All over the mountain people where plowing through the snow and lots of shovelling in the village. Last night the building of the Shrine continued into the night ready for tonight main event. We woke up to a spectacular clear blue bird sky today, with an amazing pink and purple sunrise. We should see snow begin to fall again on Tuesday evening and then continue into Wednesday. Fire Festival Log Carry
Fire Festival Log Carry Watch the towns men on their journey down the mountain through town in the Fire Festival Log Carry. The preparation for the fire festival begins the summer beforehand, when the village men cut down the ceremonial tree. The log carry is then held on the 13th of January. The men carry the log from Hikage Gondola station past the Nagasaka Gondola Station, and then down towards the site of the fire festival at the bottom of the village. There is no mechanical power to move this giant log along the epic path – just good-old fashioned man power and rope. The fire festival brings the snow again Morning everyone! There’ll be a lot of powder up there this morning with a heap of fresh snow overnight. The snow looks to be clearing today and into tomorrow. Yesterday around town you would have seen the start to the fire festival festivities. The building will now commence in preparation for tomorrows festivities. Snow clouds rolling in for the weekend Snow wise we’re looking at a light snow fall during today and a heavier dump overnight. A few clear days next week with snowfall to commence again on Wednesday. The festivities for the fire festival are going to begin today with the chosen men bringing the trees down into the village. It’s going to be amazing to watch as they prepare and construct the shrine for Monday. Being one of the three most famous festivals in Japan you’re very lucky if you’re in Nozawa Onsen this weekend!
