Sun Snow Nozawa Onsen Sun shining but Gondola on wind hold It doesn’t happen very often in the season but today looks like the wind is strong and unfortunately blowing straight up the mountain and affecting the safety of the Gondola operation so there wont be any skiing today. We may get some snow later though. Tomorrow looks like the winds will ease and the sun will be back. So a good day to check out the Snow Monkeys or take a stroll around town today. First Week Season Nozawa
First Week Season Nozawa What a first week of the season in Nozawa Today marks a week of the resort opening here in Nozawa and it has been a doozy. The snow up top has been terrific especially for this early season. We have had multiple days with 10-20cm top ups of fresh snow and some beautiful bluebird days. Yesterday was no exception with 15cm of fresh on the deck in the morning and clear blue skies. Still very few people about to share it with too. Checking the resort update and looks like Uenotaira along with all of Yamabiko will remain open today. No fresh snow overnight to report and the base sitting at 50cm. Looks like a bit […]

First Day Nozawa Season
First Day Nozawa Season A November to remember in Nozawa. I can’t remember the last time I got to ski in November and it felt good. The snow was a mix of natural and man made but there was ample cover on the run that was open. Was fast and firm in the morning and softened up a bit as the day went on. The snow also kicked in after lunch and got pretty heavy into the afternoon. The snow continued overnight and the resort reporting 12cm of fresh overnight. Was fairly quiet up top yesterday but a few guests and a mix of excited new seasonal staff. Think will be pretty quiet most of the week ahead of the […]

Myoko Suginohara Nozawa Onsen Staring at Sugi When you gaze across the valley from Nozawa you pick up amazing views of Mt Myoko and Mt Hiuchi. Two formidable mountains, both sitting at an elevation of just under 2500 meters above sea level with Mt Hiuchi winning by a few meters. Myoko Kogen is graced with 5 ski resorts and Suginohara is one of them that stares right back at us in Nozawa. It is only a 49 minute drive from Nozawa Onsen so another great option to explore for a day trip. Having been to Suginohara a fair few times over the past 30 years but last season was the first time to ride the lifts. Usually we just use […]
