Highly isolated light snow showers mixed with clouds and sunny breaks. The temperatures are pretty cold, especially up top where -9C is the current reading. The fresh powder is deep and plentiful across all areas of the resort. Its hard to go wrong anywhere really. Groomers are fast and soft, trees and off piste has vast tracts of deep powder. The snow started to fall earlier than expected just after dark last night and after a brief respite during the early hours of the morning began to fall at heavier levels around 3am this morning. Temperatures are still rather moderate sitting around 0 in the village and -4C up top, although we expected this to drop later in the day. The good news is that high clouds are racing across the skies indicating an approaching cold front expected tonight. But for the time being we have prefrontal warmth with temperatures into the positives. Best areas for skiing today will be the groomed runs which should be slightly wet, especially later in the day. Crystal clear blue sky with not a cloud in sight, light winds, very cold temperatures and plenty of deep fresh. Atmospheric visibility is top notch so the views from the top will be superb. Look west for views of the Sea of Japan and Sado island offshore. Today all piste courses will be excellent; fast and smooth and will remain that way well into the afternoon with the light crowds. At the moment we have quite cold temperatures and continued flurries which have lasted the night. Since close of lifts 5cm has been added up top, 8cm mid mountain indication windblown conditions. Conditions will be excellent across the whole mountain. Groomers will be fast and smooth. The trees and off piste will have superb moderately deep powder stashes. Nice! Base up top: 210 cm    Temp Top; -9 Degrees Base at bottom; 95 cm New Snow since close: 10-15 cm Weather; Light snow   Light snowfalls have continue without respite overnight in Nozawa Onsen, as a result we have recorded some decent totals since the close of lifts yesterday. 10cm was recorded up top, 15cm across the mid mountain and 5cm at village level. At the moment conditions are overcast with occasional flurries and cold temperatures across the mountain. We expect visibility to improve later in the day with a partly cloudy afternoon on the cards. Although quite wet at the moment, temperatures are set to drop to around sea level seeing an improvement in the snow quality later in the afternoon. Visibility is limited on the top half of the mountain and winds are gusting moderate at the summit. The heavily anticipated first flakes began to fall late yesterday afternoon and increased into the night. We have had 20cm fall up top and 15cm in the village, although these readings were taken at 7am, its likely that twice as much has fallen since then. Temperatures are colder than yesterday with a freezing level of around 600m. Winds are strong across the mountain so be prepared for very cold windchill and wind hold on some lifts. It seems that the system expected to arrive overnight is slightly delayed. Snow should start to fall later today and continue into tomorrow. Temperatures are relatively warm at the moment, but should cool quickly later today and the best skiing should be the groomed runs, with off piste being variable with a surface crust. We currently have overcast conditions above the village and temperatures are cool at the summit, warmer down low. Best areas of the resort will be the upper half if your hunting some fresh or throughout all groomers if your just cruising. If the village last night was any indication then the slopes will be busy today so pick your skiing areas carefully. New Year and the fire festival are the two busiest times in Nozawa Onsen.
