Heavy Snow Nozawa Onsen Make the most of the fresh snow today as a peculiar Spring front is rolling in bringing warmer temperatures and clear days until the weekend! It’s going to be a cold and windy day though so make sure you’re wearing the extra layers if you’re heading up the mountain. Japan is world-renowned for having some of the BEST snow in the world… Why does Japan have such good snow though!? WELL, there just happens to be a perfect combination of cold air from Russia and China, moisture from the Sea of Japan (which you can see from Yamabiko on a clear day), and the lift when the wind hits Japan’s mountains along the west coast. It […]

Waking up snowy Nozawa
Waking up snowy Nozawa Yesterday offered a lovely respite from the constant Snowy winter days we had been experiencing, with gorgeous azure skies and sunshine that defrosted cold bodies. It was so warm it almost felt like a spring skiing day up on the mountain. The day was filled with the echoes of snow sliding off village roofs. From the top of Yamabiko, you could see all the way to the Sea of Japan. But this morning, the clouds have descended and every one in town is waking up to lovely large flakes lofting from the sky. Great vibe in town last night too with the Taiko drums, Ski History Parade and Junken competition. Have not seen so many people […]

Powder Day Nozawa Onsen

One of the best runs is Skyline. It’s a long looping track tracing down the side of the mountain, offering beautiful views down into the valley and Nozawa Onsen lying far below. It is over 7 Km long if start at the top of […]
Exploring Snowy Nozawa Onsen
Exploring Snowy Nozawa Onsen In the past two days we’ve had just under 2 metres of new snow! And the snow will still be falling for the rest of the week with brilliant skiing and boarding conditions in that fresh powder. One of the things I often hear visitors talking about is how they love Nozawa Onsen because it’s also a traditional Japanese village. It’s what makes our home stand out from other ski resorts! So, if you’re travelled here from another country, make the most of being pushed into the unfamiliar. For every yum Western-style restaurant, there are several Japanese restaurants, selling katsu curry to fresh sashimi, yakitori, and soba style noodle dishes, and of course, ramen joints! It […]
