Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 24th January 2019 Remember the slow start we had to this season? No, me either. It’s a long distant memory now smothered in metres of snow. A reported 40 centimetres fell up top overnight. While that sounds pretty epic in itself, there’s still plenty more to come over the next week. The powder just keeps coming! We’re forecast to get a few centimetres more over the course of today. Tomorrow should see a respite in the morning before it truly kicks off in the evening. If current estimates prove to be true, we’ll have consistent snowfall well into the double digits from tomorrow right through the whole of Saturday. There’s even a bit more to go […]

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 21st January 2019
Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 21st January 2019 The official count is 35 centimetres of fresh snow at the top of Mount Kenashi overnight. To be fair though, it sure feels like more than that. Either way, there’s a fair bit in it for powder lovers today. To put the icing on that already sugary cake, there’s heaps more to come, according to the forecasters. There’s snow of some measure scheduled well into the coming week and beyond. At least four double-digit falls have been forecast to fall before next weekend and it doesn’t really look like easing too much after that. It’s hard to know, of course as looking that far into the future weather-wise comes with its inherent miscalculations. […]
Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 20th January 2019
Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 20th January 2019 There was no recorded snowfall on the mountain overnight. Despite that, we have absolutely zero to be down about. The forecasters are predicting good things ahead. Very good things! As tiny little bits of white stuff start to fall out of the sky (10:15 am) it’s a sign of what is to come. Snow is predicted to fall down upon Mount Kenashi and Nozawa Onsen on each day of the coming week. The biggest chances of epic dumps during that time are tonight and Wednesday night. Oh and Tuesday morning could get pretty real too. Of course, at any given point things could change. But one thing we do know to about a […]
Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 19th January 2019
Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 19th January 2019 Blue sky in Nozawa today, ladies and gents. It complements the 20 centimetres we had overnight quite well indeed! It looks as though today might be the only blue we see for a bit. There’s somewhere around the 1.5 metre-mark predicted to fall during the next week. If recent forecasting stays true, that could well turn into a lot more. Good times! What’s the mountain looking like today? It’s clear skies and amazing views right now with the odd snow shower predicted for the top of the mountain a bit later into the afternoon. But it’s not until tomorrow that it’s supposed to really kick off. As mentioned though, 20 centimetres fell overnight […]
A Foot and Falling, Nozawa Snow Report, 18/1/2019
A Foot and Falling, Nozawa Snow Report, 18/1/2019 Isn’t great to wake up to days like this? We’ve seen that magic foot overnight and it’s still falling. Giving white fluffy clouds an extra silver lining is what’s to come. The forecasters predict much of the same for most of the week to come. There could be a little bit of respite tomorrow but after that, the future looks bathed in white. Sunday night and all day Tuesday look like they could be on the epic side of life. As always, however, we’ll just have to wait and see. We’ve said it before though; every time the forecasters predict a little bit of snow lately it seems to turn substantial. And […]
Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 17th January 2019
Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 17th January 2019 Just the tiniest amount up top overnight but one centimetre is way better than no centimetres, right? The sun is currently in the process of forcing the clouds aside and blue sky behind is brilliant. It looks like it should be a cracker of a day on the mountain. But I know you didn’t come to this page to read about sunshine for too long. Lucky that those blue skies will give way to the good stuff this evening. In fact, there’s quite a bit of fresh snow on the radar for the coming week. At present, tonight should be good, Sunday likewise and Tuesday could get very real indeed. I guess we’ll […]

Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival 2019
Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival 2019 The Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival is one of Japan’s top three fire festivals and needless to say, a real treat to experience. It is held on January 15th each year to pray for a plentiful harvest, health and good fortune during the year to come. The festival dates back to 1863 and though the location has changed, the festivities remain the same. During this festival, the twenty-five and forty-two-year-old men from the village play a very important role. An old belief in Japan dictates that, for men, these years are unlucky ages. The twenty-five and the forty-two-year-old men in their unlucky ages construct the shaden (shrine) from beech wood that reaches a height of 18 […]
Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 11th January 2019
Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 11th January 2019 A reoccurring trend of late showed itself again overnight. The amount of actual snowfall outshone the forecast. We’re not complaining about that, of course. Between close yesterday up until 8 am this morning, we were blessed with a further 15 centimetres of snow. This to go with the massive amounts we reported earlier in the week. We’re now looking at a few quieter days, snow-wise. Today is a cloudy one but still a fantastic day to be on the mountain. Tomorrow looks set to be mainly concerned with sun and blue skies above white snow. Monday might see a top-up but we’ll have to wait and see. If we get another huge dump […]
