Snow Clearing Nozawa Onsen
Snow Clearing Nozawa Onsen The Shovel Measure in Nozawa Throwback Thursday to some big snow seasons in the past. I often measure a heavy snow season by how many times I have to clear the snow off my roof. Anyone that has been to Nozawa has seen all the locals up there risking life and limb to keep the snow at bay as it piles up over the season. A huge dump can see up to a meter of snow accumulate on the tin overnight. Get a few nights of that and the roofs can become heavy so need to be cleared. Snow Clearing Nozawa Onsen An average season in Nozawa would say have to get up there for a […]

May Snow Ski Japan Can you still ski in Japan? Have had a few people asking if can still get a ski if visit Japan now? Nozawa Onsen closed the lifts on May 7th at the end of Golden Week but there are still two ski resorts in the area open until this Sunday May 21st! Yokoteyama in Shiga Kogen and Kagura in Yuzawa. Both are pretty marginal this year so just a novelty ski but are open if keen to get in that last turn. These shots are of Yokoteyama in late April a few seasons back and the cover was still great. The top of Kagura is 1845m above sea level and Yokoteyama the highest resort in the […]
Late Season Skiing Japan
Late Season Skiing Japan Snowy Spring Surprise for Nozawa Was busy working about lunch time yesterday and my daughter looked out the window up the mountain during a break in the clouds and said; “ Look Papa it’s White”. We grabbed the skis and headed up. We were greeted by 10cm of fresh snow on the deck up at Yamabiko when we got off the Gondola. It was cold too, had been a while since needed the thermals. Wasn’t the best day of the season by any means with thick fog and a bit grippy in places but the novelty value of late season snow, pretty much all to our selves was worth the admission. Today on the other hand […]
Rentals Lessons Lifts Nozawa
Rentals Lessons Lifts Nozawa Take of two mountains in Nozawa What a rippa of a day it was yesterday! Rippa is a Japanese word which means the same as the English equivalent a ripper of a day. Always nice to get a cold blast in late March and the little top up of snow was much appreciated. In Spring I often ski without gloves but yesterday I wish I had have worn them as the temps stayed nice and cold keeping the piste fresh. The top was great and spent most of the day up at Yamabiko. As expected it got slushy and a bit sparse in places on the lower slopes but still able to ski top to bottom […]
Late March Snow Nozawa
Late March Snow Nozawa A little blast from Winters past today in Nozawa Had the fire on last night for the first time in a while as the mercury dropped in the village. Waking up to the resort reporting 9cm of fresh snow up top at Yamabiko overnight. With temps sitting at -2 degrees and should remain cool most of the day we are in for a pleasant winter treat on the mountain today. The last few days have been a bit bleak but for those that braved the elements they still managed to have a good time on the slopes. Weekend crowds will be all gone today and it should be a bit of a private ski resort. Check […]
WHEN TO START SKIING/SNOWBOARDING
WHEN TO START SKIING/SNOWBOARDING There never really is the perfect time to start your kids on either skis or a board. You may start them at seven years old and they absolutely shred the second they touch the snow. Or you might start them at three years old and they throw a tantrum for the next 10 years every time they’re at the snow. Kids are unpredictable, and the snow is the perfect environment for them to showcase this. The snow can be a cold and uncomfortable place if you don’t have the right gear. The boots may be a little too tight and there could be a mystery hole in the jacket letting in all that chilling air. The skis […]
