Absolutely knee deep in powder What a magic day we had yesterday here in Nozawa Onsen, with that 46cm of fresh powder, absolutely knee deep in the morning and it kept snowing until around midday. All over the mountain people where plowing through the snow and lots of shovelling in the village. Last night the building of the Shrine continued into the night ready for tonight main event. We woke up to a spectacular clear blue bird sky today, with an amazing pink and purple sunrise. We should see snow begin to fall again on Tuesday evening and then continue into Wednesday. Fire Festival Log Carry
Fire Festival Log Carry Watch the towns men on their journey down the mountain through town in the Fire Festival Log Carry. The preparation for the fire festival begins the summer beforehand, when the village men cut down the ceremonial tree. The log carry is then held on the 13th of January. The men carry the log from Hikage Gondola station past the Nagasaka Gondola Station, and then down towards the site of the fire festival at the bottom of the village. The fire festival brings the snow again Morning everyone! There’ll be a lot of powder up there this morning with a heap of fresh snow overnight. The snow looks to be clearing today and into tomorrow. Yesterday around town you would have seen the start to the fire festival festivities. The building will now commence in preparation for tomorrows festivities. Snow clouds rolling in for the weekend Snow wise we’re looking at a light snow fall during today and a heavier dump overnight. A few clear days next week with snowfall to commence again on Wednesday. The festivities for the fire festival are going to begin today with the chosen men bringing the trees down into the village. It’s going to be amazing to watch as they prepare and construct the shrine for Monday. Being one of the three most famous festivals in Japan you’re very lucky if you’re in Nozawa Onsen this weekend! Snow for the weekend! Yesterday we saw that predicted snow fall in the morning and then a little bit of sun shine in the afternoon. Lot’s of fun was had in ski school with Masa. Matilda wanted to share with everyone her epic stack. It was straight back into the fun for these kids. 15cm – 20cm is predicted for today and tomorrow so it’s looking like a great weekend to be in Nozawa Onsen. Waking up to snowfall. Good morning, well its always a great morning when you wake up to big white snow flakes falling. The snow has rocked up a little later than expected but great that we are getting a fresh dump of snow. This should continue through to the end of the week with light to moderate snow fall expected. The snow is coming! Well the temperature has dropped 10 degrees overnight and that snow is on it’s way again. Forecast to come in today with the heaviest fall overnight. Yesterday, the locals were out in full force working together to prepare for the next onslaught. It shows what amazing community we have in this village. Fresh powder about to drop! The sun is shining through the clouds this morning but the temperature is forecast to drop and some light snow should be on it’s way. Wednesday should see the heavy snow we’ve waited for this week which will be a good top up for the mountain, and then the snow should continue through the week. Heavy snowfall on the way! Yesterday was a fun day with the fresh dump of powder we had. Many were out there riding tree lines and making the most of it. More of that to come this week! The kids didn’t miss out yesterday with a fun event over at Hikage kids park. Nasuki got in on the fun too and even got a kiss at the end. A bit of a warmer day today with the snowfall starting tonight, continuing tomorrow and the peak snow predicted to fall on Wednesday at this stage. Nozawa Snow Report Sunday 7th January 2018
Powder Sunday After a great day on the mountain yesterday we saw snow start to fall in the late afternoon, this didn’t stop the town coming out for the Rock-Paper-Scissors tournament which was a lot of fun and there were a lot of prizes given out, even a pair of skis. We also saw a parade of ski attire over the last century here in Nozawa Onsen. Remember there is the Sled race with Nasuki the Nozawa Onsen mascot at the Hikage ski slope kids park from 1:30PM.
