Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 19th January 2019 Blue sky in Nozawa today, ladies and gents. It complements the 20 centimetres we had overnight quite well indeed! It looks as though today might be the only blue we see for a bit. There’s somewhere around the 1.5 metre-mark predicted to fall during the next week. If recent forecasting stays true, that could well turn into a lot more. Good times! What’s the mountain looking like today? It’s clear skies and amazing views right now with the odd snow shower predicted for the top of the mountain a bit later into the afternoon. But it’s not until tomorrow that it’s supposed to really kick off. As mentioned though, 20 centimetres fell overnight […]

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 17th January 2019
Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 17th January 2019 Just the tiniest amount up top overnight but one centimetre is way better than no centimetres, right? Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival
Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival 2019 The Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival is one of Japan’s top three fire festivals and needless to say, a real treat to experience. It is held on January 15th each year to pray for a plentiful harvest, health and good fortune during the year to come. The festival dates back to 1863 and though the location has changed, the festivities remain the same. During this festival, the twenty-five and forty-two-year-old men from the village play a very important role. An old belief in Japan dictates that, for men, these years are unlucky ages. The twenty-five and the forty-two-year-old men in their unlucky ages construct the shaden (shrine) from beech wood that reaches a height of 18 […]

We’re now looking at a few quieter days, snow-wise. Today is a cloudy one but still a fantastic day to be on the mountain. Tomorrow looks set to be mainly concerned with sun and blue skies above white snow. Monday might see a top-up but we’ll have to wait and see. If we get another huge dump […]
