Perfect Day Nozawa Onsen When most overseas travellers think of skiing in Japan, it’s Niseko in Hokkadio which usually first comes to mind… Nozawa Onsen is often overlooked by travellers and in a way, that’s one of the reason’s this place is so special. It’s only a two hour train and bus ride away from Tokyo, yet remains a hidden gem. The resort itself offers a myriad of challenging, leisurely and picturesque runs. There’s tree skiing within the Yamabiko area. From the top, on a clear sunny day, you can spot the Sea of Japan in the distance, peeking behind Mt Myoko. Then there’s the famous skyline run taking you from the top to the bottom of Mt Kenashi, with […]

Enjoy the now Nozawa
Enjoy the now Nozawa Isn’t it wild how we spent December worrying about whether the snow would come! Now we have more than we know what to do with. The snow gods have been blessing us at Nozawa Onsen since Christmas and the snow favours won’t be stopping any time soon with more snow in the forecast. At the year’s beginning, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed about the year to come, feeling anxious concern over the future and regret about what happened the year previous. Nozawa Onsen and its peaceful charm offer a time to enjoy the present. Next time you’re out skiing or boarding up at Nozawa, I encourage you to stop, pause and reflect. Take a […]
Powder Day Nozawa Onsen
Powder Day Nozawa Onsen Yesterday we had the most epic of powder days! With more than one metre of fresh snow falling over the last few days, the resort has been full of eager people excited to experience the best of the Japanese winter. Most of the resort is open now and there are so many wondrous places to explore. Will be even better today with almost another “: Half a Meter” of snow falling overnight! One of the best runs is Skyline. It’s a long looping track tracing down the side of the mountain, offering beautiful views down into the valley and Nozawa Onsen lying far below. It is over 7 Km long if start at the top of […]
Exploring Snowy Nozawa Onsen
Exploring Snowy Nozawa Onsen In the past two days we’ve had just under 2 metres of new snow! And the snow will still be falling for the rest of the week with brilliant skiing and boarding conditions in that fresh powder. One of the things I often hear visitors talking about is how they love Nozawa Onsen because it’s also a traditional Japanese village. It’s what makes our home stand out from other ski resorts! So, if you’re travelled here from another country, make the most of being pushed into the unfamiliar. For every yum Western-style restaurant, there are several Japanese restaurants, selling katsu curry to fresh sashimi, yakitori, and soba style noodle dishes, and of course, ramen joints! It […]
Snow filled January Nozawa
Snow filled January Nozawa It’s a ‘half a meter Monday’ with a massive 60cm or “Two Magic Feet” of fresh snow falling overnight up top at Yamabiko! The snow will continue to fall throughout the day with another 30cm of fresh snow expected to fall by the end of the day! It’s not too late to book your Nozawa Onsen holiday and make the most of the epic snow. Check the link for availability. TODAY: Temperature at the top; -6 degrees New snow since yesterday; Just […]

Nozawa New Years Eve
Nozawa New Years Eve It’s Ōmisoka! It’s the final day of 2022 and you’re in the most perfect place to celebrate bringing in the New Year! From 4.30pm to 11.30pm there should be night skiing at Nozawa Ski Resort by Nagasaka Gondola, with a countdown to midnight and fireworks. Night skiing will be confirmed later in the day. For a more quiet, contemplative New Years, you can take part in Hatsumode. This is the traditional Japanese practice of visiting the local shrine and/or temple. In this case, it’s O-yu. There are good luck tokens for the year ahead and you can send your wishes into the New Year. The temple’s bell is rung 108 times. New Years, or Shōgatsu, is a […]

2023 Nozawa around the corner
2023 Nozawa around the corner During yesterday’s skiing and snowboarding session, the clouds lifted revealing gorgeous sunshine day. The usual three thermal layers, puffer and waterproof jacket shed for just a couple of layers under the shell. The views over Nozawa Onsen and the surrounding valley were magnificent. Can you believe it, New Year’s Eve is just three days away! There are usually two main options for celebrating New Year’s Eve in Nozawa. Either having some fun night skiing and enjoying fireworks on the Nagasaka Slope under the main gondola (weather dependent) or visiting the shrine and temple area by O-yu to reflect and send out your wishes for the New Year. Can read more here on New Years in […]
Sunny day Nozawa Resort
Sunny day Nozawa Resort It was an excellent day up at Nozawa Snow Resort yesterday with patches of fresh powder still to be discovered and so much more terrain to explore. It felt great to work up a sweat while skiing the moguls! The reward – a beautiful view looking down over snow covered, picturesque Nozawa Onsen village – the clouds lifting just in time. The village is bustling with visitors and there’s a great atmosphere all round as we head into the final week of 2022. Isn’t it crazy how fast this year has gone?
