Kids Ski Free Nozawa Breathe in the fresh mountain air it’s Sunday Just a dusting overnight for Nozawa and still snowing lightly now with nice cold temps and light winds again. Fairly clear down low but looks like cloud covering the top of the mountain. Cold temps and cloud with the chance of light snow should keep the pistes fairly nice all day. Being a Sunday the Tokyo crowd should all head off at around lunch time and leave some pretty empty slopes for the afternoon. It is also Kids ski free day today which is great for all the kids staying at the moment aged 6 -15 Years old Please tell kids to leave their regular ski passes at […]

Beautiful January Days Nozawa
Beautiful January Days Nozawa It is pretty obvious that this is not our best season for snow fall in not only Nozawa but the whole of Japan this year. However the last few days have been spectacular on the mountain particularly up top. If you are a hungry powder hound and looking for deep off piste skiing you won’t find that deep powder we normally get at this time of year. But talking with some families yesterday they said they probably prefer the current conditions as there are no winds, temps are not freezing, they are getting a good dose of sunshine and the snow on the piste especially up top is fantastic. So for all the families with kids […]
Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival
Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival ” Himatsuri” 2020 Lots of amazing images coming out of the last nights ceremony in Nozawa. It was a spectacular night and the pantomime played out perfectly with all running smoothly, no major injuries and blessed by the gods with just the right amount of snow to top it off. Thanks to everyone that visited and for respecting the locals and this age old tradition. Arigatou Gozaimashhita. Enjoy some of the highlights and we hope to see you next year. It is a busy week though so also consider coming other times. The ski season generally runs from mid December to mid April or a bit longer. Nozawa Fire Festival Tonight
Tonights the night in Nozawa – The Annual Dosojin Himatusri Fire Festival! Some of the young men in the Village have been waiting their whole lives for tonight. Seeing their brothers, cousins and friends lay their bodies on the line in the name of honour and tradition. Now it is their turn to sacrifice and celebrate along with the whole village for the amazing Fire Festival. During this festival, the 25 Year old and 42 Year old men from the village play a very important role. A traditional belief in Japan dictates that, for men, these years are unlucky ages. These men together with up to 100 other experienced villagers have been busy constructing the Shaden (shrine) from beech wood […]
Tradition continues Nozawa Onsen
Tradition continues Nozawa Onsen Beautiful Morning Sun for Nozawa Huge day yesterday in the Village for the start of the Fire Festival preparations. The log dragging thru the village as always an amazing spectacle to watch. There was some carnage as a few of the villagers succumb to the gifts of large bottles of Sake, but all in all a very successful day and the logs made it down to the ceremonial grounds successfully. Looking like a glorious day today up top with yet another little top up of fresh and the sun has come out to play. In the village we are sitting under a sea of cloud but up top in magnificent with the trees being weighed down […]
Excitement building Nozawa Onsen
Excitement building Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival mode really starts to build from today in the village with the Dosojin “Bad Luck Year” Men of the village dragging the logs down the resort and thru the streets of town. It is quite a spectacular day so be sure to try and catch them somewhere along the way. The bad luck years are 25 and 42 and they have a bit of a competition between themselves as to who can drag the logs down the quickest. Fuelled with camaraderie and lots of Sake it is a spectacle to watch. The dragging begins at the bottom of the Kandaha Race Course at about 1pm then past Hikage and Nagasaka Gondolas then down thru […]
