Early Snow Skiing Japan Throwback Thursday from Nozawa in December 2014 9 Years ago now, the time certainly flies by. Anyone that came that season would remember it, not one you will easily forget. Normally in early December we are sitting on the edge of our seats waiting for the snow to arrive. In 2014 the seats and the whole car were buried under 3 meters of fresh powder in just a few days. It was real early too. Think the storm started on December 3rd and we went from nothing to a 2 meter base in a few days! Just 6 months away until we are back at this point and as always will be interesting to see what […]

Live Gigs Nozawa Onsen
Live Gigs Nozawa Onsen More March Sunshine today in Nozawa Beautiful spring morning here with the sun rising over the mountains and beautiful clear skies. Temps sitting at about 5 degrees but think will be a warm one ahead under this bright sun. Yesterday cloud cover most of the afternoon kept the slopes nice and fast up the top and the place to be was in the natural half pipes up at Yamabiko. This time of year that area really comes into its own and carving under the birch trees is all day fun. Lots of live Music and events on around town these days as the locals come out and everyone has more time to indulge. The ever popular […]
WHEN TO START SKIING/SNOWBOARDING
WHEN TO START SKIING/SNOWBOARDING There never really is the perfect time to start your kids on either skis or a board. You may start them at seven years old and they absolutely shred the second they touch the snow. Or you might start them at three years old and they throw a tantrum for the next 10 years every time they’re at the snow. Kids are unpredictable, and the snow is the perfect environment for them to showcase this. The snow can be a cold and uncomfortable place if you don’t have the right gear. The boots may be a little too tight and there could be a mystery hole in the jacket letting in all that chilling air. The skis […]
LAST MINUTE HOLIDAY NOZAWA
LAST MINUTE HOLIDAY NOZAWA The powder has arrived, one of the biggest dumps of the Season for Nozawa! It’s here in all it’s glory, after yesterdays tease of light snow showers all day, the snow gods have given us a massive dump, including yesterdays snow we are nearing the “Magic Meter”. Since last chair yesterday the snow flakes got bigger and heavier. With 60cm of fresh snow overnight, not bad for late February. Giving us a new base snow depth of 315cm! Hope you packed the snorkel! If all this snow is looking a little too tempting then It’s still not too late to book a stay with us over here in Nozawa. March still offers plenty of snow and […]
Another Dump Nozawa Onsen
Another Dump Nozawa Onsen Another day another amazing dump of fresh snow in Nozawa. The powder tap has turned on and seems to be flowing hard. Late yesterday afternoon, the snowfalls began to ease and I suspected we’d get another big overnight dump as forecast. At about 8.30pm last night, the telltale signs were there as the first flakes began wafting past the village light posts. Overnight, we had thick heavy flakes falling down here in the village. Early this morning, it looks like the skies are clearing for a perfect bluebird day ahead. A rinse and repeat of yesterday? The overnight figures certainly suggests so; Yamabiko 20cm, Uenotaira 33cm. How many best days of the season can we have […]
50cm Snow Overnight Nozawa
50cm Snow Overnight Nozawa Suki ni ikimashyo! Let’s go skiing! Last night, 50cm of fresh snow fell up top on Yamabiko we were only expecting 30cm so was a real bonus to get 50cm. The base now at 260cm so grade to get over that 2.5 meter mark. It even snowed briefly in Tokyo yesterday and the mercury is dropping below zero Celsius across the country. It’s a strong winter pressure pattern bringing in this influx of cold air and we are not complaining here at Nozawa Onsen! It’s some of the lowest temperatures Japan has seen as a country in a decade. TODAY: Temperature at the top; -10 degrees on Yamabiko and -12 degrees on Uenotaira! New snow since […]
Snow week coming Nozawa
Snow week coming Nozawa One of my favourite things about skiing at Nozawa Onsen, is seeing all the pups and dogs racing across the ski field. Siberian Huskies, Shiba, labradors and retrievers. Every day, I spot at least five furry friends running about in the snow. It’s simply adorable. Even more so if the dog is wearing ski goggles, little booties or a warm coat! Of all the places I’ve skied, I’ve never seen so many dogs! If you or your family member would like to pat the dog, you can ask via the phrase below! It’s always good to introduce yourself to the owner as well! Anata no inu ni sawattemo iidesuka? さわっても いいですか? This week is looking to […]
