Myoko Suginohara Nozawa Onsen Staring at Sugi When you gaze across the valley from Nozawa you pick up amazing views of Mt Myoko and Mt Hiuchi. Two formidable mountains, both sitting at an elevation of just under 2500 meters above sea level with Mt Hiuchi winning by a few meters. Myoko Kogen is graced with 5 ski resorts and Suginohara is one of them that stares right back at us in Nozawa. It is only a 49 minute drive from Nozawa Onsen so another great option to explore for a day trip. Having been to Suginohara a fair few times over the past 30 years but last season was the first time to ride the lifts. Usually we just use […]

Skiing Nozawa Japan December
Skiing Nozawa Japan December 20cm of Fresh snow for Nozawa Yesterday the Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort was reporting a beautiful 20cm of fresh snow falling across Yamabiko at the top of the resort. Checking the web cams this morning and it is nice and white all the way down to Paradise slope. https://nozawa-onsen.com/nozawa-webcams/ We even saw our first snow of the winter in the village yesterday afternoon. It has not settled down here but certainly has up top and the resort is also using the machines to make more snow in the hope of a 25th of November opening. Just like that and Autumn has been engulfed by the white brush of winter. Looking at the 12 day forecast and […]

Car Parking Nozawa Onsen
Car Parking Nozawa Onsen Leave your car at home if coming to Nozawa During winter as many know Nozawa gets an incredible amount of snow. It is not uncommon to get up to 1 meter of fresh snow cover the village overnight. This combined with narrow roads and a lack of parking make Nozawa a much better town to explore on foot than by car. The beauty of Nozawa Onsen compared to many other ski resorts is that it is very compact and ski lifts, restaurants, onsens and everything are within easy walking distance. With the introduction of the Bullet Train to Iiyama just down the road a few years back and the Snow shuttle bus, public transport to Nozawa […]
Best Time Visit Nozawa
Best Time Visit Nozawa Red, Green, Yellow, Blue and White delight in Nozawa A few days ago all the colours came to life in Nozawa Onsen. Up at Yamabiko we received our first magic dusting of snow for the season and the way it united with the Autumn “Koyo” colours was spectacular. October is early to get snow in Nozawa and to be honest we are not really ready for it. Prefer to see some more of this beautiful foliage of the Autumn fall and get some great hiking in before the winter snow arrives. Best Time Visit Nozawa Looking at the forecast we may get another small dusting on Saturday night but it is not really time for snow […]
Nozawa Do Pre Season
Nozawa Do Pre Season 20cm of fresh snow up in the Japan Alps Hakuba Sanso Lodge sitting at 2832m above sea level woke up to this amazing view yesterday morning. A decent 20cm of fresh snow settling on the deck. It was enough for the lodge staff to call the Hut closed for the season. Temps were sitting just below 0 egress but they are expecting a huge cold front from Friday night with the mercury up there dropping to as low as – 11 degrees and forecast of a whopping 75cm of fresh snow could fall up there. Even Nozawa Onsen may see some snow up top over the weekend with temps dipping just below freezing level. It is […]

Average Temperature Nozawa Japan
Average Temperature Nozawa Japan 45 Degrees Temperature Difference – Summer vs Winter Nozawa Always amazes me the massive difference in temperature in Nozawa between the Green Season and when the snow arrives. The first Thermometer shot 35 degrees and the forest was only a week ago. The second was mid winter at the same spot in town outside Nozawa Central with a fresh – 10 degrees! If you want to fully experience all 4 seasons Nozawa Onsen is the place. One of the main reasons for the dramatic swing is that in winter […]

Snow Clearing Nozawa Onsen
Snow Clearing Nozawa Onsen The Shovel Measure in Nozawa Throwback Thursday to some big snow seasons in the past. I often measure a heavy snow season by how many times I have to clear the snow off my roof. Anyone that has been to Nozawa has seen all the locals up there risking life and limb to keep the snow at bay as it piles up over the season. A huge dump can see up to a meter of snow accumulate on the tin overnight. Get a few nights of that and the roofs can become heavy so need to be cleared. Snow Clearing Nozawa Onsen An average season in Nozawa would say have to get up there for a […]
