Purple Patch in Nozawa Onsen
Ohayou and welcome to another day in paradise. Today is shaping up to be another cracker, albeit without heavy overnight falls for the first day in a while. The resort high point, Yamabiko has recorded cm overnight while down here in the village we’ve had an additional cm fall. We are expecting another beautiful blue sky morning until clouds gradually build into the afternoon so the visibility should remain excellent with spectacular views in all directions. Look out for the Sea of Japan visible from the top lifts- how many places can you ski within sight of the ocean!? Snow conditions should remain good especially up top where cold temperatures have persisted since the last storm.

Sad news from Nozawa
Yesterday was a stunning day unfortunately affected by news of the loss of two lives on Saturday. The news was a wake up call to many and a reminder to play it safe, ski within your abilities and never ride alone. If heading backcountry this is a critical point as well as skiing with an avalanche beacon, shovel and probe, and the knowledge of how to save your friend if the worst happens. Furthermore it’s important to have excellent navigation skills, a map and a good understanding of expected weather conditions/slope stability/terrain as expected for any wilderness excursion.

Looking ahead at the all important forecast; tonight a low will pass over the region establishing a north west airstream which is all we need for snow here in Nozawa; coldair displaced from Siberia collects moisture from the relatively warm waters of the Sea of Japan which then experiences orographic lifting in contact with the Japanese alps. Therefore we can expect a fresh coverage of snow tomorrow which may continue throughout the morning before clearing at some point we can expect yup to 30cm overall. Wednesday is expected to be sunny with a warming trend as another low approaches from the west, dragging up southerly prefrontal air. Following this another NW airstream will establish overnight Wednesday into Thursday provided yet more snow.
