Another Dump Nozawa Onsen
Another day another amazing dump of fresh snow in Nozawa.
The powder tap has turned on and seems to be flowing hard. Late yesterday afternoon, the snowfalls began to ease and I suspected we’d get another big overnight dump as forecast.
At about 8.30pm last night, the telltale signs were there as the first flakes began wafting past the village light posts. Overnight, we had thick heavy flakes falling down here in the village. Early this morning, it looks like the skies are clearing for a perfect bluebird day ahead. A rinse and repeat of yesterday? The overnight figures certainly suggests so; Yamabiko 20cm, Uenotaira 33cm.
How many best days of the season can we have in a week?
Yesterday was truly mind blowing. 50cm overnight was continuously topped up through the morning with an additional 20cm falling during lift hours. It was deep, as deep as it gets. Good riding was had throughout the resort exclusive to steeper areas earlier. Once exit tracks had been cut out by frothing skiers and boarders the more moderate slopes became accessible. Even the groomers had a coating of powder. From lunchtime, the clouds began to break and there was even an hour or so of sun.
It really doesn’t get any better than yesterday, or does it?
TODAY:
Temperature at the top; -10 degrees on Yamabiko and -5 degrees on Uenotaira!
New snow since yesterday; 20cm
Base at the top; 275cm – We’re getting closer to the 3 meter mark.
Snow conditions; Our favourite type of snow; POWDER!
Weather; Light snow showers throughout the day with scattered glimpses of sunshine.
LIFTS IN OPERATION:
All lifts bar Karasawa Double are open.
RUNS OPEN: All runs bar Yunomine A, Grandprix and Kamoshika and Half Pipe are open. Kandahar has restricted access again.
SNOW FORECAST:
Looking at the forecast ahead we are expecting another moderate to large dump tomorrow night and following that several days of clear air, Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be sunny. Warming temps of Wednesday afternoon prelude another system as a low moves in from the west. Following that north westerly breezes will deliver further snowfalls overnight into Thursday.
