In Nozawa Onsen at this time of year you can see and hear a lot of frogs. Just take a walk through the village and you’re bound to spot a green frog on the ground or on a wall, so watch your step! In the night time we have become used to the sound of all the frogs coming from the rice fields.
The most common species here in Nozawa is the “japanese tree frog”. The frogs are small, green, and totally harmless. They live most of the time in humid areas like the rice paddies and rivers. During the mating season they have a really specific call that you can especially hear during the night time.
The frogs are born in the rice paddies. If you look closely at the rice fields, you will also see plenty of tadpoles swimming around.
