Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 26th January 2019
Today, whether it’s Australia Day or whatever you’re deciding to call it, is a day of celebration in Nozawa Onsen. Why are we celebrating? Could it be all the white stuff falling from the sky all morning? Or could it be the forecast promising monstrous things to come? Perhaps it’s both. A few of the bars around town will no doubt be celebrating Australia Day for those who are keen (Stay Bar being one of them).
We had a comparatively modest 14 centimetres fall up top overnight. We’ve been spoiled of late. Between 8 and 10 am this morning, we had a further 10cm and it’s still going strong at 11 am. In fact, it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon. The weather gurus are telling us that there’ll be a mountain of snow to come over the day, into the evening and tomorrow morning. As we promised earlier in the week, it’s going to be an epic weekend! Just remember to stay safe, ladies and gents.
Beyond today, obviously, tomorrow is looking good on account of all the powder to be had. We should then see a top-up or a bit more tomorrow morning before a repeat act of big dump followed by top-up over Monday and Tuesday. As always, it’s good to keep in mind that forecasts always seem to be under in terms of snowfall. So who knows what we’re going to see over the next handful of days.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves again. What does it look like at the top of the mountain right now?
At 10:00 am today
Temp at the top; -7C
New snow since close; 14 cm
New snow since 8 am today; 10 cm
Base at the top; 320 cm
Weather; snowing
All of that sliding around down Mount Kenashi is going to work up an appetite. Don’t forget about Nozawa Onsen’s latest dining option, Kongo Night Market. It’s a really cool atmosphere, just near Shinden bus stop, and offers an alternative to the village’s busy restaurants. It’s particularly good for bigger groups as there is plenty of room for everyone and reservations are not necessary.
