The image above shows the fog flowing over the mountains around Nozawa. It was a cool, foggy morning with light snow falling across the resort and down in the village. Five centimetres was reported to have fallen up top overnight and conditions are set to clear up this afternoon. When you stand on top of Mount Kenashi in Nozawa and look out, there’s not a sign of civilisation as far as the eye can see. Just peak after endless peak.
There’s also very few people to share the views and the snow with at this time of the year. It’s not uncommon to have a run all to yourself. However, the fact that there’s very few people around doesn’t mean that the season is done. Magic March continues for another week and a half before the whole of April typically offers some fantastic Spring skiing. Many of the locals will tell you that Spring is the best time to be on the mountain here in Nozawa Onsen.
Nozawa Onsen Spring
Beyond March, April and the Spring season, Nozawa Onsen transforms in to a similarly magic place to visit. As the temperature becomes warm, the mountain becomes green, with an array of different reasons why the Green Season is every bit as awesome as the Snow Season. While the onsen, restaurants and traditional nature of the village remain, the warmer months see other activities such as the increasingly popular yoga retreats, biking, hiking, kayaking, and more. As a bonus, the fresh food at this time of year is worth a visit alone.
