St Anton Village Nozawa
Life in the “Snow Globe” continues here in Nozawa Onsen. It literally snowed all day yesterday, not huge amounts but consistent and made everything very pretty. 12cm reported up top overnight lying over everything we got yesterday. Think we may have been hit with a little rain down low early this morning as can see the snow line hovering above the village. But is sure to be a great day up top. Snowing lightly in the village now.
When you’ve been wandering the streets of Nozawa Onsen, have you noticed the links to Austria?
Have you skied down the Schneider slope? It’s a black run which you can float and fly down on a powder day or practice your moguls in the Spring.
Have you had a coffee and steamed Nozawana pickle bun from St Anton on the main street?
Well, in the 1970s, Nozawa Onsen became a sister village with Sankt Anton in Austria.
This is because St Anton is the hometown of Hannes Schneider. We have a plaza and hotel named after him in the Village.
Schneider spent many days exploring Nozawa’s slopes when skiing was just beginning here, helping to engage the community in this new foreign sport.
St Anton Village Nozawa
Since becoming sister villages, the two places take part in cultural exchanges, sending locals to both places learning about ski techniques, resort management and cultural life.
Have any of you skied at the resort in St Anton? It’s meant to be one of the best ski resorts in Austria!
Send us your photos if you have and tag us #nozawaonsenjapan when you find any St Anton or Schneider connections!
