The hiking season is beginning in Japan
Hiking on a clear day at Mount Nakakura. It was a wonderful ridge walk with pink flowers called Akayashio in bloom in May.
Mount Nakakura is one of the mountains within Ashio Copper Mine in Nikko, Tochigi. Unfortunately this mine is also known for the mining poisoning incident, which is considered to be the origin of Japan’s pollution problems. This mine was closed in 1973, but thanks to the efforts of the people, the area is now green again and is one of the popular mountains in the Nikko area with climbers. Hiking can be enjoyed from May to November.
Nikko is located about 260 km east of Nozawa Onsen Village and 150 km north of Tokyo, and can be reached in about four hours from Nozawa Onsen. Nikko is a famous sightseeing destination in Japan, with hiking trails, waterfalls, lakes and a famous shrine and temple called Nikko Toshogu.
