Today is officially “Mountain Day” in Japan, which is an important day to us as the surrounding mountains in Nozawa bring us so much joy all year round.
This is the first year that this day has been celebrated with a National Holiday and many people are still not aware of it.
An incredible 73% of Japan is Mountainous and when you stand on the top of Mt Kenashi in Nozawa Onsen and look around you would have to believe it. As you can see from the photo the views of the Japanese Alps are amazing. This makes for some incredible skiing in the winter and at the peak of skiing’s popularity there were more than 600 ski resorts scattered across the land!
Hiking in the warmer months is also a very popular pursuit with Japanese especially the older generation and can see hordes of them on the trains on the weekends heading to the Alps to explore. Recently the younger crew has also been discovering the beauty of Japans Mountains and the term “Yama Girl” or Mountain Girl has become very trendy with the young hip Tokyoites.
The mountains are well set up for hikers with huts and campgrounds dotted around the landscape and in some amazing locations, also great for Winter Ski touring. The huts are a great set up with futons, and some have meals available at the right time of year. Some are manned and some are just to yourself and all have amazing views and atmosphere to truly drink in the magic of the Japanese Mountain ranges.
Anyway what better way to celebrate Mountain Day than by booking a holiday to Nozawa for a skiing or hiking holiday! We look forward to seeing you in the majestic mountains of Japan soon
