Whether you’re a skier, snowboarder, or non-snow-person in Nozawa Onsen, taking a day trip to Obuse is well worth your time! Home to the Hokusai-kan Museum, Kozan Takai Memorial Museum, Nihonnoakari Museum (Japanese Lantern Museum), groves of grape and apple trees and famed for the perfect acidic soil to grow delicious chestnuts, you will be overwhelmed with things to do. Follow me along on my day trip to Obuse! Getting to Obuse from Nozawa Onsen Starting the day early, we caught the Nozawa Onsen Liner at 08:20 for just ¥600 each to Iiyama. A brief 25 minute ride later, we arrived at the newly constructed Iiyama Train Station. Instead of taking a local train or Shinkansen, we caught a connecting […]

Rainy Day Activities Nozawa
Rainy Day Activities Nozawa Good day for an Onsen After some amazing powder days and some truly glorious sunny days here in Nozawa, this morning as forecast the warmer temps have delivered some rain. It started last night and was pretty light but a bit more this morning. We are at the mercy of the southerly wind shift driving that warmer Okinawa current our way. Good news is the low pressure will move and change the wind direction and temps very soon and will see snow start to fall up top later today. Then it will intensify over the next 24 hours and bring with it some serious cold temps and snow fall. So for today maybe hit an onsen […]
Perfect Day Nozawa Onsen
Perfect Day Nozawa Onsen When most overseas travellers think of skiing in Japan, it’s Niseko in Hokkadio which usually first comes to mind… Nozawa Onsen is often overlooked by travellers and in a way, that’s one of the reason’s this place is so special. It’s only a two hour train and bus ride away from Tokyo, yet remains a hidden gem. The resort itself offers a myriad of challenging, leisurely and picturesque runs. There’s tree skiing within the Yamabiko area. From the top, on a clear sunny day, you can spot the Sea of Japan in the distance, peeking behind Mt Myoko. Then there’s the famous skyline run taking you from the top to the bottom of Mt Kenashi, with […]

Make the most of this as most of Nozawa Onsen’s accomodation is almost fully booked up for January! TODAY: Temperature at the top; -6 degrees with a windchill down to -7 (not quite as cold as yesterday!) New snow since yesterday; 0cm total Base at the top; 45cm Snow conditions; Compacted snow Weather; It’s a gorgeous […]
Courier Service Nozawa Japan
Courier Service Nozawa Japan The Journey is inevitable. Baggage is optional Have lots of people contacting us asking if can send their bags up to Nozawa when arrive. The Answer is yes! The Courier service mainly handled by a company known as Black Cat or “Kuro Neko” is next level. They will get your bag from A to B in Japan in no time and at a very reasonable cost with pure Japanese efficiency. I once sent a bag from Tokyo at 7pm and it arrived in Nozawa at 9am the next morning. I would have struggled to get it there any quicker myself! It only cost 1500 yen too. All Airports in Japan have a “Takyubin” counter where the […]
Nozawa Gondola Open Close
Nozawa Gondola Open Close Thats a wrap for the Gondola for this Green Season in Nozawa Next time you ride it, hopefully the scene will look like this nice and white at the top when you get off. It was a spectacular array of colours in the forest canopy below the Gondola these past weeks. You can still get to the top but need to hike, ride or drive. With the cool weather it is a beautiful time to ride up and cruise down. Have many people asking when will the Ski Resort open? The official planned opening date is for Saturday the 26th of November. Last year we saw a 30th of November opening with some early falls and […]
Four Seasons Nozawa Onsen
Four Seasons Nozawa Onsen Four Seasons of Nozawa at Taki No Yu Onsen Which is your favourite Onsen in Nozawa? It is a hard question with 13 free Onsens to choose from and a host of others in hotels and around the village. Some are bigger than others, some have hotter water, some have greener water, some are quiet, and some bustling. Lots of variables that will suit different folks. My personal favourite is Taki No Yu Onsen nestled up in a beautiful peaceful corner of the village. It is a good walk from the centre of town so often empty and also very cosy. These shots show the Onsen over 4 different times of the year. Some people think […]

Rafting Nozawa Onsen Japan
Rafting Nozawa Onsen Japan Rafting the River in Nozawa The mighty Chikuma River runs deep along the valley floor below Nozawa Onsen. The Chikuma River is the longest river in all of Japan. It runs through much of Nagano to Nigata and eventually the Sea of Japan. There is a lot of water flowing which can create some amazing rapids. This combined with some nice gentle sections makes for some awesome rafting. You may recognise some familiar faces from this photo. Risa san the guide also works in Ski Patrol in the Winter at Nozawa so you may have seen her fly by in the red uniform to help someone on the slopes. Many locals work for the Ski Resort […]
