Enjoy Nozawa before Lifts Roll
Nozawa is a working Village with a Ski resort. Many ski resorts are just that they were built for the skiing. Nozawa is different and was established for Centuries before the skiing was introduced 100 Years ago. It has long been a popular Mountain retreat and Onsen town for people from Tokyo and surrounds. Sometimes called the “Kyoto” of snow towns it has a unique traditional charm that many Ski Resorts lack. With beautiful temples, relaxing hot springs, amazing hiking and biking, a wide range of delicious restaurants and friendly welcoming locals there is a lot to enjoy besides just the skiing. This is even more important now when the snow has not yet arrived yet in Nozawa there […]
New Gondola Nozawa Onsen Japan
New Gondola Nozawa Onsen Japan The New Gondola Nozawa Onsen Japan, In the Bubble era in Japan there were over 600 Ski Resorts scattered across the country. Large ones, small ones and plenty of in between ones! Skiing was booming across the land and so was the Japanese Economy. The Royal Family was skiing all the time and so were the average families and all the resorts were very busy, including Nozawa Onsen. I was working in Ski Patrol in the early 90’s and some afternoons coming down Skykline Run it was standing room only and we were dealing with as many as 50 injuries a day not to mention the many we had to help slide down the […]
Nozawa Onsen Autumn Lantern Festival 2019
Nozawa Onsen Autumn Lantern Festival 2019 Each year, on the 8th and 9th of September, the village comes alive for the Nozawa Onsen Autumn Lantern Festival. It’s a great insight into Japanese tradition and hospitality. However, even if you can’t make those dates, all is not lost. Those who have visited Nozawa will remember that each little area surrounding an onsen is its own little community. Many of these communities (Akiha, surrounding Kaiya Nozawa and Nakao, the area around Villa Nozawa, as examples) host their own mini-festivals, either side of the main event. It makes for a particularly vibrant period. Visitors will hear local participants practicing drums and rehearsing dances in the days leading up to each festival. As mentioned, […]
Japan How Much Snow
Japan How Much Snow Japan How Much Snow How much snow does Japan get? People often ask us this question and the answer is it varies across the country of course but compared to other resorts on the planet we tend to get a lot! This year Nozawa received a total of about 900cm of snow fall and the peak base in late January was 355cm. That was probably regarded as a bit above average season. One great indicator of snow fall we like to see around this time of year is the huge snow walls at the nearby Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, the road was cut and opened on April the 15th this year and the highest point of […]
Advanced Skiing Guide to Nozawa
Nozawa’s terrain is considered 30% advanced but there’s a lot of fantastic off-piste riding that’s not taken into account. With so many tree runs, epic backcountry and a small park, the resort’s advanced terrain really deserves an article of its own. Here’s a break down of the best spots in Nozawa for advanced skiing. (Beginners, families and intermediates will find terrain information in this article.) Off-piste for advanced skiing in Nozawa Nozawa has one of the highest annual snowfalls in the world so the off-piste trees are magic. Nozawa is also one of the few Japanese resorts that has started to embrace off-piste skiing. The resort has opened up the tree section in the Yamabiko area at the top […]
