Snowy Day Nozawa Onsen
Today is a day for yukimi, snow viewing!
Or powder riding!
We’ve woken up to a fresh snowfall of 23cm, just under the “Magic Foot”. The snow is still falling gently down into the village, with patterns of azure blue behind the clouds.
Looking up into the mountains, it looks like a giant walked through the valley over night, shaking icing sugar everywhere; the sugary snow dusting the trees white.
It’s a welcome change after the unusual Spring-like temperatures we’ve had earlier in the week.
The local children are walking to school outside my window, all rugged up with waterproof gloves and wooly hats, a few carrying cross-country skis! The Junior High Championships currently in Nozawa finishes tomorrow, where young school children from all around Japan are competing in downhill racing, ski jumping and cross country!
TODAY:
Temperature at the top; -7 degrees on Yamabiko, -3 degrees on Uenotaira
New snow since yesterday; 23cm
Base at the top; 240cm
Snow conditions; A nice top up of our favourite powder snow, get up early to bag those fresh lines.
Weather; Snowing lightly all day today up on the mountain. Likely to see the sun popping its head through the clouds now and again too.
LIFTS IN OPERATION:
All lifts bar Karasawa Double, Utopia Double, Skyline Double and Challenge Pair are open.
RUNS OPEN: Same as yesterday.
SNOW FORECAST:
Friday should be similar conditions to today – light snow showers throughout the day with cold temperatures, just a little less chilly than today. Funnily enough, we’re back to Spring-like skiing over the weekend with warmer temperatures above 0 degrees and bluebird days! Perfect weather for enjoying a biru après ski in the sunshine.
The forecast for next week is holding strong with the switch to Northerly winds and a Siberian freight train on its way. Starting Monday, there will be light to moderate snowfall, with heavy snowfall in the evenings most nights until Friday.
Check back tomorrow for the latest forecast and don’t forget to tag #nozawaonsenjapan in your pics – we love to see your adventures out in the snow!
